cTokens are a a special unit of account for the DeFi Compound protocol. When a user locks his or her cryptocurrency on the protocol, cTokens are minted by the smart-contract and used to account the funds that users have lent, as well as any interest earned.
Each time a user supplies funds to the Compound lending pool, they are issued a corresponding balance in cTokens. This balance of cTokens is directly proportional to the stake they have in the lending pool, which accrues interest over time.
