UK-Based Lomond School to Accept Bitcoin for Tuition Fees

Lomond School, a popular boarding school in the UK, will soon start allowing students to pay their tuition fees in Bitcoin (BTC). According to BBC, the Scotland-based school will begin accepting payments in BTC from the autumn term this year.

Formed in 1977, Lomond is a private, co-educational, day and boarding school in Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, and the only day and boarding school on the west coast of Scotland.

The school charges as much as £38,000 per year for tuition fees.

Increasing Demand for Bitcoin

Lomond stated that its decision to accept Bitcoin for school fees comes after requests from some parents, and that it aligns with its “ethos of independent thinking and innovation.”

"For generations, this school has nurtured inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and open-minded risk-takers. It's really no surprise then that the inventor of the television, John Logie Baird, is a former pupil,” Head teacher Claire Chisholm said in a statement.

Lomond, however, emphasized that all Bitcoin payments will be immediately converted to GBP to guard against the notable crypto market volatility.

It noted that all Bitcoin transactions would be "secure, transparent, and lawful," adhering to UK financial regulations, such as anti-money laundering and tax compliance.

No other cryptocurrency, aside from Bitcoin, will be accepted for tuition fees, according to Lomond.

Going Beyond Theory

While many schools have explored blockchain and crypto in classrooms, only a few have used it for actual payments. Lomond School is among the first in the UK to do so at the primary and secondary levels.

Bitcoin can simplify and reduce the cost of tuition payments from overseas, bypassing banks and high transfer fees. Additionally, it offers an alternative for families without easy access to traditional banking services or credit cards.

Overall, this may pave the way for broader adoption of crypto in education, moving from theoretical discussions to hands-on, applied experiences.
